Valpo Football Announces Team Honors for Week 3

Following Saturday’s 28-25 victory over Butler in the Hoosier Helmet rivalry game at Brown Field, the Valparaiso University football team announced its team weekly awards for Week 3 on Monday.

Junior running back Robert Washington was named the team’s Offensive Player of the Week and junior defensive back DJ Hutcherson (Leesburg, Va. / Heritage [Howard]) earned the squad’s Defensive Player of the Week nod, while redshirt junior Brett Bittner (Chicago, Ill. / St. Laurence) was recognized as the Special Teams Player of the Week for the Brown & Gold.

In addition, the program revealed its Scout Team Players of the Week – offensive Liam O’Connell (Lincolnshire, Ill. / Stevenson), defensive Jake Marinelli (Avon Lake, Ohio / Avon Lake) and special teams Carter Puckett (LaPorte, Ind. / LaPorte). O’Connell was named the Valpo Scout Team Offensive Player of the Week for the third consecutive week.

Washington scored three touchdowns – two rushing and one receiving – to help Valpo to Saturday’s victory. The junior running back enjoyed his second game this season of 100+ rushing yards against the Bulldogs, this time going for 120 to help the Brown & Gold outrush the visitors 220-115. Washington, who was also named the Pioneer Football League Offensive Player of the Week on Sunday, had 26 carries and a long of 21. He added one reception, a 9-yard TD catch. Washington scored three of the team’s four TDs, with his rushing scores coming from 5 yards and 1 yard.

Hutcherson accrued seven tackles including four solos for head coach Landon Fox’s defense, while Bittner performed well on Valpo’s special teams unit.

Valpo holds its best record through three games since 2007 and its best league record through three PFL contests since 2003. The team has won four of the last five matchups with Butler for the first time since winning seven straight meetings from 1994-2000.
