Valpo Football Announces Team Awards for Week 4

The Valparaiso University football program has announced its team awards for the fourth week of the 2022 season following Saturday’s 28-21 win over defending Pioneer Football League co-champion San Diego to start league play.

The Beacons have recognized redshirt junior wide receiver Solomon Davis (Brighton, Tenn. / Brighton) as Offensive Player of the Week, redshirt freshman defensive lineman Kevin Spelman (New Lenox, Ill. / Providence Catholic) as Defensive Player of the Week and freshman Ryan Mann (Vernon Hills, Ill. / Vernon Hills) as Special Teams Player of the Week.

In addition, the squad has revealed the following scout team honors – redshirt senior quarterback Jeffrey Jackson (San Diego, Calif. / Bishop’s [San Diego]) on offense, freshman defensive back Akim Abdur-Rahim (Indianapolis, Ind. / Pike) on defense and freshman defensive back Frank Bartell (Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South) on special teams.

Davis had five receptions for 118 yards and three carries for 14 yards as part of a day that was highlighted by a 44-yard touchdown catch. He became the first Valpo player with 100 receiving yards in a game since Braden Contreras also had exactly 118 on Oct. 23, 2021 vs. Dayton. Spelman had a pair of sacks among his four tackles while also notching a QB hurry.

The Beacons have a bye week this week before returning to action on Saturday, Oct. 8 at Presbyterian.
