Urdahl notches first career goal, Caufield nets OT winner
MILWAUKEE— Wisconsin men’s hockey (6-12-1, 3-7-0 1-1-0 Big Ten) opened up the Kwik Trip Holiday Face-Off with a 3-2 win in overtime against Yale at Fiserv Forum on Tuesday.

Wisconsin’s resilience was key to their victory over the Bulldogs (3-8-0, 2-6-0 ECAC) after the Bulldogs forced overtime late in the third period.

The Badgers and Yale each received a power-play opportunity in the first period but neither team was able to convert. Wisconsin held a slight edge in shots 9-8.

Freshman forward Zach Urdahl put the Badgers up 1-0 with his first career goal at the halfway point of the second period. Corson Ceulemans started the play with a stretch pass up to Caden Brown on the far blue line. Brown hit Urdahl with a pass as he skated into Yale’s zone and fired a shot that made its way past goaltender Nathan Reid.
Yale headed into the third period eager to get on the board.

Mathieu De St. Phalle added to the tally at the 3:38 mark of the third period. Jesper Peltonen sent a pass along the boards to Jack Gorniak as he entered the offensive zone and stayed high, allowing De St. Phalle to sneak past Yale’s defense. Gorniak found De St. Phalle down low where he pulled the puck in and picked the corner for a 2-0 lead.
Yale made it a one-goal game when Teddy Wooding deflected a shot from Briggs Gammill. Cole Donhauser recorded the secondary assist on the play.

The Bulldogs tied things up with seven minutes on the clock with a goal on the final seconds of a power play. Brandon Tabakin quarterbacked with a shot from the blue line. Jared Moe made the initial block but Wooding was waiting on the doorstep and passed the rebound to Henry Wagner on the other side of the crease where he tapped the puck to even the score 2-2.

The Badgers and Yale headed to overtime to settle the score and determine who would be playing Providence in the championship match-up.

Brock Caufield reprised his role as over-time hero once more. The senior forward skated the puck the length of the ice and fired a rocket from the top of the circle past Reid to win it for Wisconsin, 3-2.

Jared Moe came in clutch once again with 19 stops on the night and a string of saves early on to keep Yale at bay.
