TU Sinks 32 Free Throws, Extends Winning Streak to Three

 

UPLAND, Ind. – The TU women’s basketball squad (9-3) picked up its third-straight victory on Monday, defeating Governors State (0-6) by a final score of 76-67. 42.1 percent of TU’s points came by way of free throws, as the team hit 32-of-42 foul shots in the triumph.

 

The Jaguars were plagued by fouls, as the visitors committed 31 personal fouls on the night. 13 infractions in the final quarter turned into 21 free throw attempts for the Trojans, helping TU secure the victory.

 

Merideth Deckard went seven-for-seven from the charity stripe, leading the team with 15 points. The junior also made two treys, while adding three steals and three assists.

 

TU continued to dominate the boards with a strong effort on Monday. The host squad grabbed 13 more rebounds and seven more offensive boards which led to nine second chance points. Kiara Nieto led the charge with a career-high 10 rebounds and six offensive rebounds.

 

The Trojans built their lead with strong shooting in the opening quarter. TU hit four triples at a 57.1 percent rate with each long ball coming from a different Trojan. The Purple and Gold hit the first bucket of the game and never relinquished control, maintaining a lead throughout the contest.

 

Madisyn Fischer and Kayla Kirtley reached double figures in scoring, combining for 26 points. Fischer secured at least 10 points for the ninth time this season, hitting seven-of-eight free throws in the win.

 

The Trojans are scheduled for another home game on Friday, as they are set to battle IU East (2-4) at 5:00 pm in Odle Arena.
