Trojans Drop League Opener to Huntington

UPLAND, Ind. – On Wednesday evening in their league opener, the TU men’s soccer team failed to score for the second straight contest, falling to defending Crossroads League Tournament champion Huntington 2-0 under the lights of Turner Stadium.

The Foresters applied consistent offensive pressure throughout the contest, firing 18 shots, 16 of which were on frame. In comparison, the Trojans managed just 10 shots and only six on goal.

Huntington (1-0-0, 1-0-0 CL) scored one goal in each half. Their first came in the 28th minute off a long range shot, while their second tally came early in the second stanza, providing a little insurance.

Brian Matipa shined for the Trojans, using his speed to create several high-quality scoring chances against a stout Huntington defensive back line. The freshman midfielder led Taylor with four shots, while also recording three shots on target. Paul McBride collected two shots off the bench for TU.

In the face of an unrelenting attack, Joaquin Hansen was stellar in net for TU once again, recording seven saves and upping his season total to 12.

The Trojans (0-2-0, 0-1-0 CL) will travel to Mount Vernon Nazarene on Saturday, looking for their first victory of the season when they take on the Cougars (1-1-0, 1-0-0 CL). Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
