Trojans Drop Game at NCAA Division I FCS Dayton
DAYTON – Playing a NCAA Division I FCS foe for the second-straight outing, Taylor moved the ball efficiently but could not slow the hosts, falling by a 52-20 margin at Dayton.
Taylor found the end zone three times on the afternoon, with the first coming via an electrifying 74-yard touchdown connection from Damon Hockett to Dakohta Sonnichsen with 8:47 left in the opening half.
TU again found pay dirt minutes later, as Ja Thomas carried it in from five yards out to cap a seven-play drive that narrowed the Dayton (2-1) lead to 24-14.
Taylor’s final score came late in the third, with Stephen Ellis rushing for a three-yard touchdown that made the score 38-20 but Dayton posted the final two scores of the game to pull away.
Dylan Scally led the offense with nine carries for 67 yards, clipping off 7.4 yards per pop, as the Trojans ran the ball 44 times for 183 yards in the contest.
Jack D’Arcy led all TU receivers with five catches and Sonnichsen used the long scoring play to end with three receptions and 91 yards.
Aven Jones paced the Taylor defense yet again with a team-high 10 stops, with Jacob Hockett posting eight. David Worlds and Parker Whitby also chipped in highlights, with Worlds breaking up three passes and Whitby registering TU’s lone sack.
Taylor managed 348 yards in the game, using a balanced attack to pile up 183 yards on the ground and 165 through the air. Dayton was too much however, ending with 556 total yards of offense.
Taylor (1-3) will return home to host No. 17 Saint Francis (IL) (3-0) on Saturday, September 23 at 1:00 pm.
