Trojans Drop First Game in Double-Overtime

ADRIAN, Mich. – TU men’s soccer played Siena Heights on its turf, where the Trojans dropped their first game of the season in double-overtime.

It was an aggressive game throughout, with each team battling the other for control of the match. Siena Heights (3-1-0) came out of the gate with speed, ripping off four shots in the opening four minutes of the match. Twenty minutes in, the Saints were out-shooting the Trojans 11-to-one, yet, TU goalie, Sam Spiegel, and the Trojan defense stubbornly withheld the Saints’ attack.

Taylor responded with three shots of its own but none landed on frame. The match moved into the half tied 0-0, but the zeros would not remain.

Siena Heights was the first to break the scoreless match, scoring its first goal of the night in the 63rd minute. After one Saints player struck the crossbar, a second rebounded the shot with the match’s first goal. Yet, it would not take long for the Trojans to respond.

TU countered with a rebounded goal of its own, ignited by the attack of junior, Sawyer Watterson. The Parma, Michigan, native fired a strike that was deflected by the Saints’ goalie. Luke Holwerda was in stellar position to transform Watterson’s shot into his second assist on the season, granting Holwerda his third goal on the year.

Tied at 1-1, the match would progress until the end of regulation, through one overtime and into a second. At last, the home team broke the tie with a chip-shot beyond Spiegel’s grasp, sending the Trojans home with their first loss of the season.

Taylor (4-1-0) returns to action inside Turner Stadium on Saturday, September 18, when the Trojans take on Missouri Baptist (1-5-0) at 12:00 pm.
