SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Strong pitching performances from a pair of freshmen weren’t quite enough on Tuesday afternoon, as IU South Bend dropped both ends of a doubleheader with St. Francis, 2-0 in game one and 3-0 in game two, at Dick Pfeil Field at Veterans Memorial Park.

Maddy Edwards allowed two runs over a complete-game seven innings in the opener, striking out five. In the second game of the day, Abby Yarnell also went the distance, recording three K’s with one earned run allowed.

The Saints (24-12, 14-6 CCAC) posted runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings of game one, but the damage was limited as the Titans (15-23, 6-10 CCAC) got out of each inning with the bases loaded. Edwards would finish the game with four shutout innings, but St. Francis would retire eight in a row to close out the win.

Savanna Schmitz and Kaylee Darnell each recorded a double in game one, as the Titans posted four hits as a team.

St. Francis posted a run in the top of the 1st to start game two, then took advantage of an error in the 4th inning to add a pair of unearned runs for a 3-0 lead. IU South Bend would put a runner in scoring position three times, including a Maddie Leisher double in the bottom of the 6th, but five hits throughout the lineup were not enough to get a run on the board.

Leisher finished 2-for-2 with a walk in game two, and was the only player to record a multi-hit game for the Titans on the day.

IUSB continues their run of six games in a three-day stretch, with a road trip to Judson on Wednesday. First pitch from Elgin, Ill. is set for 4:00 p.m. ET.
