DAVENPORT, Iowa – Bryson Taylor had his strongest outing of the season to date, but IU South Bend fell in both ends on Saturday’s doubleheader, falling to St. Ambrose 2-1 in game one, and 9-3 in game two.

Taylor took the hill in the first game, throwing all six innings and striking out nine hitters with just one earned run allowed. The Bees (16-3, 7-1 CCAC) took an early lead, taking advantage of a first-inning error and scoring for a 1-0 lead. The home team added another run in the bottom of the 3rd on a pair of base hits, as the Titans (9-16, 3-6 CCAC) were unable to get on the scoreboard until the top of the 7th. Jake Vanderwoude’s one-out single followed by a walk and a wild pitch allowed Tony Reyes to drive in the run on a sacrifice fly, but the potential tying run was left on second base to end the game.

Donnie Necas had the team’s lone extra-base hit on the day in game one, with a leadoff double in the second inning. Owen Benson reached base twice in the opener, finishing 1-for-2 with a single and a walk.

After St. Ambrose scored another first-inning run in game two for the early lead again, the Titans evened the score in the top of the 3rd, when Nolan Unger got things started with a leadoff single and a stolen base. Three hitters later, Brett Sikorski drove in Unger with a single up the middle for a 1-1 score.

IU South Bend added two more runs in the top of the 5th, with a leadoff single from Colin Mack, who moved into scoring position after Unger was hit by a pitch. Reyes and Brendan Bell each delivered RBI singles to give the Titans a 3-1 advantage.

St. Ambrose tied the game again in the bottom of the 6th, and took the lead with another run in the 7th. A five-run outburst in the 8th would put the game away and give the home team the sweep in the three-game series.

The Titans return to Rex Weade Stadium for two dates this week, beginning with a single nine-inning game with St. Francis on Wednesday, March 30. First pitch with the Saints is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
