•This week in the BIG TEN Conference
Indiana’s Ty Fryfogle recorded personal bests in receptions (11), receiving yards (200) and touchdowns (two) to lead the Hoosiers to a 24-0 victory at Michigan State on Saturday. His 178 first half receiving yards marked the most by a Big Ten player since Michigan’s Roy Roundtree in 2010 and he became the seventh receiver in program history to snag 200-plus yards receiving in a single game and the first since Ricky Jones in 2106.
• Wisconsin jumped out to a 28-0 first-half lead and never looked back, defeating Michigan, 49-11, Saturday night at Michigan Stadium. The Badgers recorded 468 yards of offense in the contest, including 341 yards on the ground. Four different Badgers combined to tally five rushing touchdowns in the game, including a pair of scores by Nakia Watson. Wisconsin’s 38-point win was its largest-ever margin of victory over Michigan, surpassing the previous mark of 22 points in 1962.
• Wisconsin improved to 20-6 (.769) in road games under head coach Paul Chryst. Only Clemson (.929), Oklahoma (.923), Alabama (.913), Ohio State (.880) and Georgia (.792) have won a higher percentage of their road games since 2015.
• In two games this season, the Badgers have scored at least 45 points and have won both games by 38 points, marking the first time Wisconsin has won consecutive Big Ten games by at least 38 points since 1912.
• With a 27-20 victory against Purdue last Saturday, Northwestern improved to 4-0 for the first time since 2015 and 4-0 in conference play for the first time since 1996. Under Pat Fitzgerald, the Wildcats have won 48 one-possession games, tied for the most nationally in the last 15 seasons. Northwestern wide receiver Ramaud Chiaokhiao-Bowman finished the game with eight catches for 86 yards and three touchdowns, all career highs for the senior.
• Iowa’s Zach VanValkenburg recorded a career-high three sacks in the team’s 35-7 victory at Minnesota, the most by a Hawkeye since A.J. Epenesa in 2019. The senior tallied five tackles in the contest, including four solo stops, and anchored a defense that held the Gophers to seven points, nearly 30 points fewer than their average.
• The Hawkeyes have now won six straight games against the Gophers for the first time in the 114-meeting series. This win streak has allowed them to tie the series (42-42-2) with the Floyd of Rosedale on the line. Iowa has won 16 of its last 20 meetings against the Gophers and is 17-4 in its last 21 trophy games. The Hawkeyes have not trailed at any point against Minnesota since the 4th quarter of 2016.
• Illinois’ Isaiah Williams broke the school record for rushing yards by a quarterback with 192 yards on 31 attempts to lead the Illini to a 23-20 comeback win at Rutgers in his first career start. The freshman added 104 passing yards to finish the contest with 296 yards of total offense.
• On Oct. 23, the Big Ten Conference announced the launch of the ‘United As One’ social justice campaign. ‘United As One’ is among several conference-wide Equality Coalition initiatives dedicated to constructively and collectively recognizing and eliminating racism and hate in our society by creating resources for inclusion, empowerment and accountability.
• The Big Ten Conference established the Equality Coalition in 2020 with 227 members including presidents and chancellors, directors of athletics, coaches, student-athletes, conference and school administrators, alumni, families and friends representing all 14 institutions.
