Trojans Roll in Blowout Victory at Goshen
GOSHEN, Ind. – Taylor led from wire-to-wire at Goshen on Tuesday, moving to 2-0 in the Crossroads League for the first time since 2016-2017 with a 70-49 victory over the Maple Leafs.
TU attacked Goshen (2-6, 0-2 CL) in the paint from the start, racing to a 12-3 lead and widening the margin to 24-9 by the midway point of the opening half. The Trojans hit eight of their first 11 shots from the field and went eight-of-nine from the free throw line during that span, setting the tone with 16 points in the paint.
Taylor did not look back from there, getting nine-straight points from CJ Penha to push the gap to 33-14 and the rout was on as TU’s margin swelled to 43-16 before settling at a 23-point margin by the intermission.
The Trojans shot 15-of-21 from inside the arc in the first half, converted 10-of-11 attempts from the charity stripe and posted a 26-6 edge in paint scoring. On the defensive end, Taylor was equally as dominant, limiting Goshen to seven field goals and forcing 12 turnovers.
The lead was never seriously threatened in the second stanza, as Taylor eased to the 21-point win to mark its third-straight win over the Leafs of at least 20 points.
The Trojans ended the evening at 56.2 percent from the floor, while holding Goshen to a 28.8-percent rate. TU won the battle on the glass by nine and finished with 42 points in the paint to GC’s 18.
Penha led the way with 17 points in 24 minutes, to go with three steals and two blocks. Jason Hubbard followed with 16 points, seven rebounds, three blocks and a trio of thefts and Jeff Clayton went six-of-six from the floor for a career-high 12 points.
James McCloud also cracked double-figures with 10 points and Vincent Miranda matched a career-high with 10 rebounds, while adding six points and four assists.
The win was Taylor’s second-straight road victory to open Crossroads League play, marking the first time the program has won its first two road league games since the 2005-2006 campaign.
The Trojans (4-2, 2-0 CL) will look to notch another road victory when it is scheduled to return to play at Mount Vernon Nazarene (0-0, 0-0 CL) at 7:00 pm on December 2.
