JOLIET, Ill. — No. 6 seed Saint Xavier University again headlined the day with its second upset of the 2021 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament. The Cougars, who needed to win Tuesday’s play-in game to gain entry into the eight-team field, stopped No. 2 seed St. Ambrose University 5-1, while top-seeded Olivet Nazarene gained an easy 13-3 decision over No. 4 seed Indiana University South Bend in the other winner’s bracket contest on Saturday at DuPage Medical Group Field.
That leaves Olivet Nazarene and Saint Xavier as the lone two remaining unbeatens, while St. Ambrose, Indiana South Bend, No. 5 seed University of St. Francis and No. 7 seed Roosevelt University battle back through the elimination bracket.
Roosevelt remained alive with its 5-0 upset of No. 3 seed Judson University to knock the Eagles out of the tournament, while St. Francis eliminated No. 8 Trinity Christian College with its 11-1 victory.
Strong pitching was the story of the day on Saturday as all four starters went at least seven innings – two went the distance – and combined to yield just two runs in their 33 innings of work.
After a day off Sunday, the six remaining teams return to action on Monday at DuPage Medical Group Field. Roosevelt (19-18) and Indiana South Bend (24-23) start the day at 10 am followed by St. Francis (22-19) and St. Ambrose (27-22) at 1. The winners of those two games then meet at 4 before Saint Xavier (31-23) and Olivet Nazarene (32-19) square off at 7.
