RV Taylor Rallies Late to Nab Big Win
SURPRISE, Ariz. – The Coach Calderone Invitational continued for the RV Trojans on Friday, as the TU baseball squad (4-2) battled in the rain against Ottawa University of Arizona (0-2). The contest was shortened to eight innings due to the inclement weather but the Trojans still had time to pour on 12 runs in the last four innings for a 12-5 victory.
A slow start put the Trojans in an early deficit, as TU remained scoreless through the first four frames. The sluggish offense ended a 13-inning scoreless streak going back to its previous contest with a pair of runs in the fifth.
The two-run fifth tied the game between TU and OUAZ. Brett Lawson offered an extra-base hit to get Taylor on the scoreboard, hitting an RBI double to center field. Lawson quickly scored for the second run of the frame off a Rusche single.
Ben Kalbaugh displayed discipline at the plate and on the base paths to give Taylor the lead in the sixth inning. The sophomore got on base with a walk, before scoring on a wild pitch.
Jacob Morris was exceptional for TU, going two-for-five at bat with four RBI. The leftfielder brought the power, blasting two homeruns in the contest. Morris recorded a long ball in back-to-back innings, landing a pair of two-run shots.
The TU offense saw multiple hits come in from Morris, Lawson, Rusche, Kade Vander Molen and TJ Bass. The lineup hit its stride for the largest scoring output of the season with 12 runs. Lawson joined Morris with two extra-base hits after posting his second double in the eighth frame, scoring two runners for TU.
Joe Moran and Matt Dutkowski teamed up to pitch for all eight innings on Friday. Moran drew the start, logging five innings of work to earn his second win in as many appearances this season. The senior gave up one earned run and struck out eight batters, including three strikeouts in the fifth frame.
Dutkowski finished the outing on the mound for Taylor, logging his first career save. The freshman righty nabbed three whiffs in three innings on the bump.
The Purple and Gold will wrap up their trip in Arizona on Saturday against Saint Katherine (1-0) at 4:00 pm (EST).
