Rummell, Cagle garner Louisville Slugger/Wilson NFCA DI weekly honors

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Illinois’ Delaney Rummell and Clemson’s Valerie Cagle captured the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Player and Wilson/NFCA Pitcher of the week honors. The duo was recognized for their outstanding play during the week of April 12-18.

Rummell hit .750 (9-for-12) with 10 RBI, helping the Illini to three Big Ten wins over Purdue last weekend. She recorded three multi-hit and multi-RBI games, registered four extra-base hits, and slugged 1.250. Rummell was 3-for-3 in games one and three, doubling twice and driving in a career high five runs in the series opener. The Gilberts, Ill. native added a home run and three RBI in game two before posting two more runs batted in the third meeting. Playing the hot corner, Rummell did not make an error in 10 chances and was part of a 5-4-3 double play.

Cagle was lights out for the 16th-ranked Tigers last week. The right-handed hurler tossed two no-hitters and finished the week 4-0 with a 0.00 ERA, 36 strikeouts and two walks over 23.2 innings of work. She issued just two walks and did not surrender an extra-base hit. Cagle opened the week with a five-inning no-hitter against Winthrop in which she fanned 11 and walked one. In her two shutouts of Boston College, the Yorktown, Va. native was very efficient throwing just 77 and 73 pitches. The latter number came in a nine-strikeout no-hitter to close out the weekend. She did not allow a ball out of the infield and was a fielding error shy of a perfect game. Cagle, who earned Louisville Slugger/NFCA Player of the Week honors earlier this season, also hit .500 with two doubles, two home runs and seven RBI in six games.
