Patberg’s Effort Helps Fuel No. 19 Indiana Past Wisconsin

 

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Behind another 20-point performance from senior guard Ali Patberg, No. 19 Indiana pushed past Wisconsin, 74-49, in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall on Sunday afternoon. Patberg led the way with 21 points while sophomore forward Mackenzie Holmes and junior guard Grace Berger each notched double figures as IU won its sixth-straight game in the series against the Badgers.

 

KEY MOMENTS

  • Holmes scored back-to-back layups for the Hoosiers (7-3, 5-1 BIG) to take an early lead, 4-1, in the first frame. IU led, 5-3, at the first media timeout. With just under five minutes, the Hoosiers continued to distance themselves from the Badgers (3-6, 0-6 B1G) with a 9-2 run. Indiana would lead as much as nine before Wisconsin initiated a run of their own. IU ended the quarter, 15-12.
  • In the second, freshman guard Chloe Moore-McNeil nailed a 3-pointer to start it off for the Hoosiers. Holmes followed with a layup, 20-14. But an 8-2 Wisconsin run would tie it up, 20-20 to force an Indiana timeout. With just over five minutes left in the half, Indiana pushed the lead with a 10-2 run led by Holmes with five points, 30-22. Patberg chimed in with a couple of 3-pointers.
  • IU ended the half with a steal and an assist by Patberg with four seconds left on a fastbreak layup to senior guard Keyanna Warthen to give the Hoosiers their largest lead going into the locker room, 35-24.
  • Indiana held the Badgers to just four points within the final five minutes left to play in the first half. They also forced a total of 10 turnovers and held the Badgers without a 3-pointer on the evening.
  • In the third frame, the Hoosiers went on a 9-2 run and led as much as 18, 44-26. Berger scored six of her 12 points in the third. The Badgers tried to respond, but Patberg ended any sign of a run with a couple more 3-pointers.
  • Gulbe and Patberg hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to take a 20-point lead and force a Wisconsin timeout. With five minutes left to go, Indiana would go on another 8-0 run and lead as much as 26 en route to tonight’s victory.

  • Dating back to the 2015-16 season, Indiana has now won six-straight against the Badgers. Sunday’s win is also the 50th victory for the Hoosiers in the all-time series as they now lead 50-24 in the series.
  • Three scored in double figures for the Hoosiers behind senior guard Ali Patberg who drained a team-leading 21 points while sophomore forward Mackenzie Holmes scored 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
  • Junior guard Grace Berger also added 12 points, a team-high six assists and five rebounds.
  • Patberg sunk a season-high five 3-pointers on her way to a team-leading 21 points. The Columbus, Ind. native also had five assists and three rebounds.
  • Holmes reached double-figures for the sixth straight contest by scoring 14 points. She also grabbed a team-leading nine rebounds.
  • Berger led the team in assists as she aided in six Indiana buckets.
  • Senior guard Keyanna Warthen notched a season-high six points on Sunday afternoon.
  • The Hoosiers held their opponent scoreless from behind the arc for the first time this season. Wisconsin was 0-for-8 from 3-point land.
  • Indiana made nine 3-pointers on the afternoon, tying their season high.
  • The Hoosiers took advantage of the Badgers turnovers, scoring 24 points off of them compared to Wisconsin’s five.
