No. 19 Benedictine Mesa Edges RV TU in Low-Scoring Affair
MESA, Ariz. – A pitching battled determined the winner on Thursday night, as the 19th-ranked Benedictine Mesa Redhawks (2-0) defeated RV Taylor (3-2) by a final score of 2-0. Neither team crossed home plate until the sixth inning with the host Redhawks nabbing one run in the sixth and one in the seventh to narrowly stay undefeated.
The starting pitcher for TU, Noah Huseman, gave the squad five solid innings of action on the mound. In his first action of the season, the senior delivered five innings with seven strikeouts, while only allowing three baserunners. Those three baserunners were either left stranded or caught stealing, as Huseman never allowed a man in scoring position.
On the offensive side, Taylor struggled to get the bats going. Walks in the first and third frames helped the Trojans move into scoring position but the team was unable to bring either player home.
Kade Vander Molen logged TU’s first hit of the night, hitting a single through the middle of the infield in the sixth inning. The Purple and Gold went on to grab one hit in each of the final four innings without scoring a run. The visiting Trojans threatened a comeback effort in the ninth inning, loading the bases with one out. Two walks and a single from Ben Kalbaugh put the go-ahead run at first base, before a double play ended the inning and the night for TU.
As a staff, TU pitchers came out with a great effort against BenU Mesa. The group held the opposition to a .185 batting average with 13 total strikeouts.
The Trojans are scheduled to continue the Coach Calderone Invitational on Friday against Ottawa (0-1) at 3:00 pm (EST).
