The top ranking for Michigan marks the first No. 1 ranking for a Big Ten team in this poll since Ohio State took the No. 1 spot on Nov. 1, 2015 and the first time since Sept. 22, 2019 in which an SEC team has not claimed the No. 1 ranking.

Washington advanced one spot to No. 2 after defeating Oregon 34-31 in the Pac-12 Championship game, marking the highest ranking for the Huskies in the history of the poll. The Ducks fell to No. 8 after the three-point loss to the Huskies.

Texas climbed four spots to No. 3 after a decisive 28-point victory against Oklahoma State in the Big 12 Championship. Alabama moved up for spots to No. 4 after defeating Georgia 27-24 in the SEC Championship. Georgia fell five spots to No. 6 by virtue of the three-point loss to the Crimson Tide, ending the Bulldogs’ 23-week run as the nation’s No. 1 team.

Florida State fell one spot to No. 5 after a narrow 10-point victory against Louisville in the ACC Championship game. The Cardinals remained No. 15 after the loss to the Seminoles.

Iowa dropped out of the poll completely after suffering a 26-point loss to Michigan in the Big Ten Championship game. Notre Dame returned to the poll claiming No. 16.

The SEC led all conferences with five teams, followed by the Big Ten and Pac-12 with three, ACC and Big 12 with two, FBS Independents with one.

ABOUT THE FWAA-NFF SUPER 16 POLL:
The FWAA-NFF Super 16 Poll was established at the conclusion of the 2013 season by long-time partners, the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and the National Football Foundation (NFF). Voters rank the top 16 teams in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision, and the results will be released every Sunday of the 2023 season; the individual votes of all members will also be made public. The first regular season poll will be released on Tuesday, Sept. 5 (to account for Labor Day games), and the final poll will be released Sunday, Dec. 3. The pollsters consist of FWAA writers and College Football Hall of Famers who were selected to create a balanced-geographical perspective. The poll utilizes a computer program designed by Sports Systems, a TicketManager company, to compile the rankings and the Cody Kellner Points Index to publish the individual votes.
