McCarthy Named MVC Defensive Player of the Week

Following a weekend of action during which she made her mark on the Valpo volleyball record book in multiple ways, fifth-year middle Peyton McCarthy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) was named the Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday afternoon.

McCarthy opened the weekend by tying her season high with eight blocks in Valpo’s sweep of Missouri State. Her sixth block of the match was the 400th of her career, while eight blocks in a three-set match is tied for third-most in a sweep in the 25-point era.

McCarthy followed on Saturday with three more rejections as Valpo swept Southern Illinois, in the process moving past Valpo Athletics Hall of Famer Lauren Moulton for fifth place in program history in career blocks. McCarthy also stood out offensively in the sweep of the Salukis, tallying a match-best 10 kills on .421 hitting.

On the weekend, McCarthy averaged 1.83 blocks/set in the pair of wins by the Beacons. Her 0.94 blocks/set paces all Valpo players and is good for ninth in the Valley. This honor was the third weekly award of McCarthy’s career and her second this season — she is the only MVC player this year to earn both a Player of the Week and a Defensive Player of the Week award.
