Maryland and Michigan Earn Weekly Baseball Honors

Terrapins’ Vought named Player of the Week; Wolverines’ Weston voted Pitcher of the Week; Terrapins’ Savacool earns Freshman of the Week

 

 

Player of the Week
Justin Vought, Maryland
C – Sr. – Wilkes-Barre, Pa. – Wyoming Valley West

 

  • Went 4-for-5 (.800) at the plate with three home runs and four RBI in Saturday’s series-clinching win against Illinois
  • Finished with a 2.600 slugging percentage and a .800 on-base percentage on the weekend
  • Became one of three Terrapins to hit three home runs in a single game and the first since 2009, with all three homers coming in consecutive at-bats after striking out in his first plate appearance
  • The two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree wins his first career Big Ten Player of the Week award

  • Threw a complete-game one-hitter in a win at Michigan State on May 8
  • Struck out nine batters, didn’t issue a walk and got 13 outs via ground balls
  • Retired 20 consecutive batters before ending the streak in the eighth inning
  • Earns his first career Big Ten Pitcher of the Week honor
  • Last Michigan Pitcher of the Week: Steven Hajjar (Feb. 17, 2020)

 

Freshman of the Week
Jason Savacool, Maryland

P – Baldwinsville, N.Y. – Baker 

 

  • Tossed 8.1 innings of three-run ball against Illinois to get earn his conference-leading sixth win of the season in the first leg of Saturday’s doubleheader sweep
  • Struck out a career-high seven batters to help the Terrapins to their fourth consecutive weekend series win
  • Retired the first 10 batters he faced in order and took a one-hitter into the seventh, holding the league’s best offense to its third-lowest hit total on the season
  • Wins his third Big Ten Freshman of the Week award
