IUSB Volleyball Takes Decisive Fifth Set to Earn its First Victory of the Season

 

ELGIN, Ill. – The Indiana University South Bend volleyball team earned its first win of the season on Friday, Feb. 26, when the Titans defeated Judson, 3-2, in their first road contest of the year. With the victory, IU South Bend improves to 1-1 on the season and in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

Indiana University South Bend shook off its sluggish start from the first game of the season on Wednesday, Feb. 24, to take the first two sets 25-15 and 25-21. The Eagles evened the score at two apiece with third and fourth set victories of 25-18 and 25-23.

In the decisive fifth, IUSB scored five of the final seven points en route to a 15-8 victory, completing the first win of the season.

Senior teammates Hannah Marchand and Julie Brown led the Titan attack on Friday evening. Marchand registered a season-high 22 kills on 44 attempts, good for a .386 clip. Brown was the other Titan with double-digit kills, finishing the night with a season-high 10 kills.

Sophomore Whitney Gessinger was one of five IUSB players with double-digits digs, finishing the night with 19 for her second straight game in double figures. Junior Courtney Lengacher collected a career-high 17 digs to follow behind.

Junior McKenzie Powell distributed a season-high 42 assists while also tallying five kills and 14 kills. Brown added a team-high five blocks.

As a team, IUSB collected 54 total kills, 92 digs and seven blocks while attacking at a .157 clip. Judson added 54 kills, 89 digs and eight blocks while attacking at a .102 clip.

Indiana University South Bend looks to keep the momentum rolling Tuesday, March2 when it begins its two-game homestand, welcoming Roosevelt into the Student Activities Center. First serve is slated for 7:00 p.m. EST.
