CHICAGO, Ill. – IU South Bend held an early lead in both games of Tuesday’s doubleheader, but No. 25 Saint Xavier battled back to earn the sweep over the Titans, winning the opener 12-6 and the nightcap, 5-4.

Olivia Zarantonello led the way with five base hits across both games, including her first home run of the season coming in game one. Emily Anglin finished a combined 4-for-8 with 4 RBI and a double while Maddie Leisher was 3-for-9 with a double, two RBI and a run scored.

The Titans (9-15, 0-2 CCAC) opened the day with three runs in the top of the 1st, highlighted by a two-out, two-RBI double from Anglin, scoring Maddy Edwards and Shelby Baker. The Cougars (13-5, 2-0 CCAC) responded with three runs of their own in the 2nd inning, then after another run-scoring base hit from Anglin in the 3rd, took the lead with four runs in the bottom half of the inning for a 7-4 lead.

The home team added three more in the next inning, before Zarantonello’s homer cut the Saint Xavier lead to 10-6, but the Cougars would retire seven of the next eight batters to close out the game 1 win.

Another run driven in from Anglin to start game two, along with an RBI from Danielle Gebhart on a bases-loaded walk put the Titans ahead 2-0 after two innings. Saint Xavier responded again, scoring single runs in the 3rd and 4th to even the score. A two-out triple in the bottom of the 5th would break the tie in favor of the home team, scoring three runs to put the Cougars up 5-2.

In their last chance at the plate during the 7th inning, Zarantonello singled and Jozie Ramer hit a two-out double, allowing Leisher to score a two-RBI double and cut the lead to 5-4. The comeback would finish just short, with the final out coming on a hard-hit ball to center.

The Titans will look to bounce back on Friday, when they head to Trinity International for a doubleheader with the Trojans. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. ET.
