SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Indiana University South Bend head softball coach Natalie Newell announced her resignation from IUSB in conjunction with becoming the new head coach of Bethel University. Newell leaves the Titans after five seasons, the most recent two as the head coach.

Newell was named the head coach at the beginning of the 2019-20 year and recorded a 18-29 record in two seasons that were cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Titans finished this season winning seven of its last eight games and earned the seventh seed in the conference tournament, the second-highest finish in program history. Mackenzie Myars and Shelby Baker were named to the All-CCAC Team following the season.
Newell began her coaching career at IUSB as an assistant under Brittney Lightfoot for three seasons, starting the program from scratch and helping the Titans achieve a 51-55 overall record with a 31-37 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference record.
During the 2019 season, Newell and the Titans won a program best 23 games after going 23-14 overall and 14-8 during conference play. The historic season came to an end during the CCAC tournament after falling to the No. 1 seeded team in the tournament ONU with a final score of 13-12.
A 2015 Bethel graduate Newell was a decorated pitcher for the Bethel Pilots as a student-athlete, finishing her career as a two-time NAIA All-American, four-time First Team All-Crossroads League, three-time Crossroads League Pitcher of the Year, a three-time Capital One Academic All-American, and a Bethel Ron Paulsen Memorial Award winner.
Newell’s impact on the IUSB softball program will be felt for years to come. Athletic Director Steve Bruce will begin a national search for the next head coach at IUSB.
