ELGIN, Ill. – The Indiana University South Bend baseball team split a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference twin bill at Judson University to clinch the season series with the Eagles Wednesday, April 28. The Titans outlasted the Eagles in 11 innings to take game one 3-2, before falling 6-0 in game two.

After the day, IUSB moves to 20-22 on the season and 16-11 in league play. With three games left in the regular-season, the Titans are tied with St. Francis for fourth in the conference standings as they prepare to host league-leader St. Ambrose at Rex Weade Stadium on May 1-2.

Game One: IUSB 3, JU 2 (11 inn.)
Neither team mustered much offense in game one as the Titans and Eagles finished with 11 hits apiece. Senior Logan Young, junior Collin Mack and sophomore Jared Bais were the only plyers to record more than one hit while Young added a game-high two RBIs with one run scored. IUSB left eight on base while Judson stranded seven in the eleven-inning matchup.

On the mound, Indiana University South Bend used just two pitchers in starter Kage Haeck and Matt Smith who came in relief to pitch the final 6.1 innings with four strikeouts to earn his first win of the season. Haeck threw 4.2 innings that allowed just two hits and one run scored against 15 Eagles.

The Titans jumped on the Eagles right away, plating a run in the second and taking the early 1-0 lead. Bais led with a walk and eventually scored after an error by the Judson pitcher and an RBI single from Young.

Mack pushed the Titan lead to two in the fourth frame with an RBI single to right field as Nolan Unger scored but the Eagles responded in the bottom half, cutting the deficit to one after an RBI double to left off Haeck.

As both teams were held scoreless in the fifth and sixth, Judson made the most of a two-out triple and scored off a wild pitch from Smith and evened the ball game at 2-2.

The Titans broke through in the top of the 11th with a leadoff home run off the bat of Young with the Eagles coming to bat in the bottom half of the inning.

Smith worked around a leadoff double where he sat the batters down in order with a ground out and two fly outs to help preserve the 3-2 extra-inning victory.

Game Two: JU 6, IUSB 0
Similar to game one, the Titans were unable to muster much offense as IUSB finished with six hits compared to nine for the Eagles. IU South Bend left eight on base while JU stranded four.

Freshman Jaidyn Morris was the pitcher of record, tossing 4.1 innings as the starter allowing all nine Eagle hits for six runs. Zack Dehn threw the scoreless 1.2 innings with two strikeouts.

Junior transfer Scott Stetz led the offense after going 2-for-3 while Logan SmithJake Vanderwoude, Mack and Unger collected a hit in the night cap.

IUSB looks to finish in the top-five of the conference standings to receive an automatic bid to the CCAC Tournament by hosting the Fighting Bees this weekend, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 1 at 1 p.m. The final regular-season game is slated for Sunday, May 2 against SAU, beginning at 12:00 p.m.

If the Titans drop below the fifth seed, IUSB will play for a spot in the top-eight on Tuesday, May 4 as the winner will advance to DuPage Medical Group Field in Joliet, Ill. Higher seed will host Tuesday’s matchup.
