Heritage Christian bests Andrean to take home Class A State Championship
Paced by a first-ever state finals hat trick by freshman Abby Foulk, Heritage Christian romped to a 4-0 victory over Andrean in the Class 1-A girls state championship game.
Foulk opened the scoring in the first half with a goal in the 20th minute. Kya Crooke provided the assist. It proved to be the only goal coach Jimmy Wiltsee’s squad needed to record the program’s state title in its first appearance.
Foulk completed the hat trick in the second half, scoring her second goal on a penalty kick in the 42nd minute, then an unassisted goal in the 58th minute.
The Eagles (15-8) closed the scoring less than a minute later when Crooke, also a freshman, added an unassisted tally.
Foulk and Crooke each finished the season with 35 goals. Goal keeper Audrey Booher recorded the shutout for HC and was credited with one save.
Andrean, coached by Jeff Clapman, was seeking its second state title in its third appearance. The 59ers, who finished 15-4-3, won the Class 1-A title in 2016.
Heritage Christian’s Curnutt receives Wynns Mental Attitude Award
Following the match, Caroline Curnutt of Heritage Christian High School was named the recipient of the Theresia Wynns Mental Attitude Award in Class A Girls Soccer.
Caroline is a three-year varsity starter and current team captain. She ranks third in her class of 125 students and was awarded Acadmic All-State for her effort in the classsroom. Caroline is a National Honor Society member and has served in numerous leadership positions in Heritage Christian’s Student Council and Best Buddies programs during her high school career, currently serving as the vice president of both. Caroline is also a four-year member of Heritage Christian’s Lacrosse team.
The daughter of Monte and Cathlynn Curnutt of Fishers, Caroline will attend Hope College to major in Neuroscience.
The award is annually presented to a senior, who is nominated by her principal and coach, and has demonstrated excellence in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability during her four years of high school. The award is named in honor of Theresia Wynns, who served as an IHSAA assistant commissioner from 1997- 2012 and administered the sports of girls and boys soccer as well as the licensing of over 8,000 officials in the state of Indiana.
Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, a proud corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Heritage Christian High School’s general scholarship fund in the name of Caroline Curnutt.
