Novotny breaks career digs record
WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Gina Novotny etched her name in history on Wednesday night for Grace’s volleyball team.
Novotny became the program’s all-time leader in digs during Grace’s 3-1 defeat to Huntington at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.
With her match-high 22 digs tonight, Novotny moved into first place on Grace’s career list with 2,211 digs. She topped a 24-year-old record held by Melissa Simfukwe (Rants) who played from 1994-97.
Novotny had a strong performance during the match, serving three aces and adding six assists. She was perfect in serve receive in 19 attempts.
Jadyn Ross impressed as well. The freshman amassed 14 kills and 12 digs and was a perfect 38-for-38 on serve receive.
Cassadi Colbert also registered double-digit kills with 13 kills on a .250 percentage.
The teams exchanged wins over the first two sets with each team winning 25-18. Huntington won the opener after producing 16 kills on just four errors.
Grace responded with a seven-point win to even the match. Colbert had five kills on seven swings in the set, and Jenna Mueller had four kills on four attacks.
Grace’s offense was quiet in the third game, allowing the Foresters to take the pivotal third set 25-16.
The fourth set could have gone to either side. Grace held an 18-14 lead late into the set before Huntington rallied to tie the game and eventually gain a 24-22 edge.
A kill from Colbert and an ace by Morgan Syoen tied the score, sending the set into extra points. But a service error by Grace followed by a block point gave the Foresters a 26-24 win to clinch the match.
The Lady Lancers remain at home for two more matches this week. On Friday, Grace will host No. 8 Marian at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Grace will host No. 22 Bethel at 2 p.m.
