Grace’s winning streak snapped at Huntington
HUNTINGTON, Ind. – Grace’s men’s basketball team could not extend its five-game winning streak, losing 93-85 at Huntington on Saturday.
The Lancers (11-5, 4-3 Crossroads League) excelled in practically every offensive category. Grace shot 54 percent from the floor and 50 percent on 3-pointers, and the team had just eight turnovers.
But the Lancers were unable to slow down the Foresters (11-5, 4-4 CL) who scored 93 points in the win. Huntington made 13 of its 15 free throws as well compared to Grace, who hit just 3 of 8 from the foul stripe.
Grace could not have started the contest on a worse foot. The Lancers scored just six points over the first nine minutes.
As a result, Huntington stunned Grace by claiming a 26-6 lead.
The Lancers’ offense began to show life thanks to 3-pointers by Jake Wadding and Jakob Gibbs, and Grace managed to cut the deficit to eight at halftime (44-36).
The teams played evenly in the second half. Huntington was unable to build a significant lead, but Grace was unable to fully come back.
The closest that Grace came the rest of the way was with 10 minutes remaining. Wadding scored in the paint after a pass from Matt Jennings to cut Huntington’s lead to 64-58. But the Lancers came up empty on their next four possessions to end a potential rally.
Grace fouled down the stretch to extend the game, but the Foresters sank 10 free throws in the final minute to ice the victory.
Wadding led Grace in scoring with 18 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 0 turnovers, and Frankie Davidson added 17 points, 3 boards and 2 assists.
Jennings tallied 16 points with nine assists, and Haden Deaton added 15 points and four rebounds.
Cade Gibbs finished with 9 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals, and Jakob Gibbs chipped in 6 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists.
The Lancers play Mt. Vernon Nazarene twice next week. The teams will play in Ohio on Wednesday before returning to Winona Lake on Saturday.
