Grace blows past Red Wolves
RICHMOND, Ind. – Grace’s women’s basketball team got back to its winning ways with an 88-59 rout of IU East on Tuesday.
The Lady Lancers (4-5) had four players score in double figures, led by 27 points from Maddie Ryman (Warsaw Tiger standout). Ryman’s 27 points tied her career high, which was set eight days ago against Holy Cross.
Grace seized control of the game immediately after tipoff. The Lady Lancers scored on their first five possessions to grab a 12-2 lead, sparked by triples from Kiersten Poor and Kamryn Hostetler.
The Red Wolves struggled with Grace’s defense, committing four turnovers in the quarter and shooting just 35 percent from the floor.
Grace, on the other hand, was explosive on offense. The Lady Lancers led 34-16 after the first quarter after making 15 of 22 (68 percent) from the floor.
Kyannah Stull and Ryman scored seven points apiece in the frame, and Kaylie Warble made all three of her shots for six points.
It was Grace’s turn to cough up the ball in the second quarter. After giving up zero turnovers in the first quarter, Grace lost the ball six times in the second to slow its attack.
The Red Wolves could not manage to cut into Grace’s lead, however, and faced a big deficit at halftime, 49-31.
Grace pushed its lead up to 30 late in the third quarter at 68-37 after a pair of free throws from Kaylee Patton.
The Lady Lancers continued to maintain their 30-point cushion into the fourth quarter. Grace used its bench liberally in the fourth quarter with the victory in hand.
Overall, 13 players saw time for Grace with nine of those players scoring.
Ryman shot 11 of 17 from the floor and buried a trio of 3-pointers. Stull finished with 16 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds and 3 steals, and Hostetler added 11 points, 3 assists and 2 steals.
Patton was dynamic off the bench; the freshman had 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Warble scored eight points, Kenzie McMahon tallied 4 points, 7 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 assists, and Poor added 5 points, 7 boards and 4 assists.
Grace had 18 assists, second-most on the season, and shot 50 percent as a team. The Lady Lancers forced IU East into 20 turnovers.
“Tonight we looked a lot more like Grace women’s basketball. We got into a good flow with our press and our defense,” said Grace head coach Dan Davis. “Offensively, we were more in sync as a team. We shared the ball better and moved as one, as evidenced by our 18 assists. We’ll continue to get better tomorrow.”
The Lady Lancers will return home on Friday for a 5 p.m. matchup with IU Kokomo.
