Overtime Goal Gives Tigers Fifth State Title
In one of the most impressive defensive battles in state finals history, Evansville Memorial’s Ella Hamner headed in the only goal in the 93rd minute to give her squad a 1-0 triumph over Mishawaka Marian in the Class 2-A girls title game.

The game featured the Tigers (20-3-1) who averaged five goals per contest this season and won their six previous tournament games by a combined 41-2. Marian, meanwhile, allowed only 12 goals all season and recorded 15 shutouts.

It was the style of coach Henry Vu’s Knights that won out, through 80 minutes of regulation time, the first seven-minute overtime and through almost six full minutes of the second OT.

Finally, with the clock winding toward one minute left before a shootout, Memorial’s Kennedy Neighbors took a short-corner pass and sent a pass of her own to the front of the Marian net. Hamner was waiting there and headed it in with 1:19 left on the clock.

The title is the fifth in Memorial’s program history and the fourth under coach Angie Lensing’s tutelage.

Marian, which was seeking its second state title (2012) finished 20-4.
