Dwenger Outlasts Cathedral in PKs to take State Championship
Grace Morris converted a penalty kick in the first round of sudden-death PKs to give Fort Wayne Dwenger a 1-0 (4-3) victory over Indianapolis Cathedral in the Class 2A girls final.
The two teams battled to a 0-0 deadlock through 80 minutes of regulation time and two overtime periods. The teams combined for only seven shots in the game.
In the first session of penalty kicks, each team converted three times — although Cathedral had a chance to win on its final kick, but Dwenger goalkeeper Cecilia Garrett made a diving-catch save to her left to force the sudden-death round.
The title is the third for Dwenger (17-1) in program history, but the first since 2006. First-year coach James McCaig’s Saints beat Cathedral, 1-0, in a regular season match-up. Dwenger’s only loss since last season’s championship match to Evansville Mater Dei, came in its regular-season finale to Homestead.
Coach Marc Behringer’s Irish finished 10-7-3.
Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger’s Cecilia Garrett receives Mental Attitude Award
Following the match, Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger’s Cecilia Garrett was named the recipient of the IHSAA Class 2A Girls Soccer Mental Attitude Award presented by Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance.
The award is annually presented to a senior who is nominated by her principal and coach, and has demonstrated excellence in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability during her four years of high school.
She is the daughter of Jason and Sharon Garrett of Fort Wayne. She will be attending Ave Maria University to pursue a degree in Physical Therapy and plans to play softball.
Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, a corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger High School’s general scholarship fund in the name of Cecilia Garrett.
