Crossroads League Announces Athletes of the Week | September 13-19

JACKSON, Mich. – The Crossroads League Athletes of the Week were announced on Monday, recognizing the league’s top athletes from September 13 through 19. Sports Information Directors from the league institutions nominate student-athletes for the awards and vote on each week’s winners.
Volleyball Attacker of the Week
Nicole Winkler, Mount Vernon Nazarene
Winkler was an offensive force for the Cougars with 4.8 kills per set and 17.7 kills per match over three league wins for Mount Vernon Nazarene. Winkler also hit .273, logged five aces and posted a pair of double-doubles.

Volleyball Defender of the Week
Stephaney Fifield, Taylor
Fifield was busy in RV Taylor’s five-set win over No. 16 Indiana Wesleyan, recording 33 digs, seven assists and one ace. Fifield had at least 16 digs in each of TU’s three wins, topping the 20-dig mark twice and averaging 24.0 digs per match for the week.

Volleyball Setter of the Week
Paige Brenner, Mount Vernon Nazarene
Brenner led MVNU to a 3-0 week with 11.1 assists and 2.7 digs per outing, and further aided the Cougars with a .415 hitting percentage over 41 swings. Brenner posted a 55-assist, 12-dig, seven-kill effort in Mount Vernon Nazarene’s five-set win at No. 22 Bethel.

Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week
Allie Schlom, Marian
Schlom scored a goal and added an assist in each of No. 7 Marian’s wins on the week, helping MU top No. 25 Northwestern Ohio and No. 14 Aquinas. Schlom’s goals were the game-winners in each contest.

Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Hannah Brackenbury, Taylor
Brackenbury and the Taylor defense posted three more shutouts, setting a program record with seven-straight shutouts to open the season. The sophomore goalie posted seven total saves in the three clean slates.

Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week
David Green, Marian
Green registered a hat trick in Marian’s 5-1 win over Concordia. The freshman forward was playing in his sixth collegiate game and the scores were the first of his career with the Knights.

Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Nathan Sharrett, Indiana Wesleyan
Sharrett posted a pair of shutouts with 11 saves in net for Indiana Wesleyan, helping the Wildcats to victories over Michigan-Dearborn and Northwestern Ohio.

Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week
Shelby Christman, Huntington
Christman topped the field of 166 runners at Taylor’s Ray Bullock Invitational, posting a time of 18:10 to edge a pair of runners from the defending national champion Saint Francis (IL) lineup.

Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week
Derek Van Prooyen, Taylor
Van Prooyen scored a win on his home course, leading No.1-ranked Taylor to a team victory at the Ray Bullock Invite. Van Prooyen led a field of 171 runners, posting a time of 25:31.3 to pace a trio of Trojans at the top of the field.

Women’s Tennis Player of the Week
Teodora Simion, Marian
Simion went unbeaten at No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles for Marian, going 6-0 in a trio of Knight victories. Wins by Simion clinched two of MU’s three victories during the week.

Men’s Tennis Player of the Week
Jeremias Rocco, Indiana Wesleyan
Rocco won each of his four matches, with two wins at No. 2 singles and two more at No. 2 doubles. Rocco’s two victories against Grace helped Indiana Wesleyan secure the regular season Crossroads League Championship.
