Crossroads League Announces Athletes of the Week | Sep. 14-20

 

AVON, Ohio – The Crossroads League Athletes of the Week were announced on Monday, recognizing the top athletes from the week of September 14 through 20. Sports Information Directors from the league nominate student-athletes for the award and vote on each week’s winners.

Volleyball Attacker of the Week
Skyler Van Note, Marian

Van Note led No. 1 Marian to wins over MVNU and USF with 3.6 kills and 5.9 digs per set. The All-American and CL Player of the Year posted eight kills and 19 digs in a sweep of Mount Vernon Nazarene, before going for 17 kills and 22 digs in a four-set win over Saint Francis.

Volleyball Defender of the Week
Maddy Payne, Bethel

Payne collected 12 total blocks to go with 16 kills in Bethel’s victories over Taylor and MVNU. The freshman middle narrowly missed a double-double in a sweep of Mount Vernon Nazarene with 10 kills and nine blocks.

Volleyball Setter of the Week
Gabbey Harrington, Grace

Harrington played a major role in the Lancers’ upset win of No. 7 Indiana Wesleyan and helped Grace remain unbeaten with 38 assists in a sweep of Huntington. In the two victories, Harrington posted 8.4 assists, 2.3 digs and 1.0 kills per set.

Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week
Chloe Ulmer, Marian
Ulmer poured in six goals in a pair of lopsided victories for No. 2 Marian, striking twice in a 7-0 defeat of USF and adding four more goals and an assist in the Knights’ 10-1 victory against Huntington.

Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Hope Stacker, Indiana Wesleyan
Stacker piled up 18 saves in 215 minutes of work for No. 7 IWU, helping the Wildcats battle to a 1-1 draw with No. 14 Grace and a 1-0 shutout of No. 24 Spring Arbor.

 

Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week
Jose Barquin, Bethel
Barquin tallied four goals and an assist in Bethel’s two matches against Goshen and Saint Francis. The senior midfielder highlighted the week with a hat trick in BU’s 5-1 win against USF.

Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Joshua Orecchio, Mount Vernon Nazarene
Orecchio anchored the MVNU defense in wins over No. 12 Spring Arbor and Taylor. In the 1-0 upset of SAU, Orecchio’s successful penalty kick proved to be the difference as the lone score of the contest.

 

Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week
Sarah Harden, Taylor

Harden torched her home course for a course and Taylor program record time of 17:42 to win the Ray Bullock Invite on Friday. The three-time cross country All-American topped the competitive field by 10 seconds to help No. 6 TU to a dominant first-place showing.

 

Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week
Landon Miller, Indiana Wesleyan

Miller scored an individual win at Taylor’s Ray Bullock Invite, crossing with a time of 25:14 to set a new course record and top the field by 12 seconds.

 

Women’s Tennis Player of the Week
Alexa Elpers, Marian

Elpers went 7-0 on the week to help No. 24 MU to wins over Spring Arbor, Goshen, Mount Vernon Nazarene and Huntington. The sophomore went 3-0 in doubles action and 4-0 in singles play for the Knights.

 

Men’s Tennis Player of the Week
Martin Carrizo, Indiana Wesleyan

Carrizo continued his dominant fall campaign, remaining unblemished with three wins at No. 1 doubles, two victories at No. 1 singles and one win at No. 2 singles. The standout freshman’s efforts helped secure the Crossroads League Championship for Indiana Wesleyan.
