Crossroads League Announces Athletes of the Week | March 21-27

 

JACKSON, Mich. – The Crossroads League Athletes of the Week were announced on Monday, recognizing the league’s top athletes from March 21 through 27. Sports Information Directors from the league institutions nominate student-athletes for the awards and vote on each week’s winners.

 

Baseball Player of the Week
AJ Bordenet, Marian
Bordenet had six hits in seven at bats for Marian in a doubleheader sweep of Goshen. The freshman left the yard twice in those six hits, adding four runs, four RBI and two stolen bases to a slash line of .857/.889/1.714.

 

Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Hunter Hoffman, Indiana Wesleyan
Hoffman pitched into the seventh inning of IWU’s 9-3 win over Mount Vernon Nazarene, fanning eight over 6.2 innings and recording the win. The junior allowed four hits, two walks and just one earned run.

 

Softball Player of the Week
Shelbie Stotts, Marian
Stotts went off for No. 16 Marian at the plate, helping the Knights to a 4-0 week by hitting .538 with three home runs, 10 RBI and six runs scored. The senior cleared the fences in three-straight games and posted a slugging percentage of 1.231.

 

Softball Pitcher of the Week
Olivia Stunkel, Marian
Stunkel went 2-0 without allowing a run over nine innings in No. 16 Marian’s wins over Spring Arbor and Indiana Southeast. The freshman piled up 16 strikeouts and only gave up five hits.

 

Women’s Outdoor TF Track Athlete of the Week
Abbey Brennan, Taylor
Brennan scored wins in the 1,500 and 4×800-meter relay for Taylor in its first outdoor meet of the season. Brennan also hit qualifying marks in each event, reaching the NAIA A-standard with a time of 4:40.69 in the 1,500 meters.

 

Women’s Outdoor TF Field Athlete of the Week
Arriana Benjamin, Marian
Benjamin opened her outdoor season by setting new Marian records in the hammer and shot put and qualifying for NAIA Nationals in each event. The junior’s hammer throw of 51.05 meters is also the top mark in the NAIA so far this season.

 

Men’s Outdoor TF Track Athlete of the Week
Alex Helmuth, Taylor
Helmuth automatically qualified for NAIA Nationals in the 10,000-meters for Taylor at the Emory Invite, crossing the finish line with a race-winning time of 30:38.63.

 

Men’s Outdoor TF Field Athlete of the Week
Liam Hesting, Taylor
Hesting hit three national qualifying marks on the opening weekend of outdoor season, provisionally qualifying in the hammer, discus and shot put for Taylor at the Emory Thrills in the Hills Open. Hesting scored wins in the hammer and shot put, while taking second in the discus.

 

Women’s Tennis Player of the Week
Alexia Pena, Bethel
Pena won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and 6-0 at No. 1 doubles for Bethel in a 7-0 team victory over Manchester.

 

Men’s Tennis Player of the Week
Victor Bonsergent, Bethel
Bonsergent went 2-0 for Bethel, helping the Pilots to a pair of team victories. The sophomore won at No. 1 doubles in BU’s defeat of Manchester and added a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles in a win over Grace Christian.

 

Women’s Golfer of the Week
Nicole Jung, Taylor
Jung took second place out of 50 competitors for No. 19 Taylor at the Wolfpack Invite. The senior carded scores of 81, 75 and 74 in succession to lead the Trojans to a third-place team finish in New Orleans.

 

Men’s Golfer of the Week
Matthew Chapman, Marian
Chapman finished second-of-67 golfers at the Heritage Hills Collegiate, posting back-to-back rounds of 75 to lead the No. 22 Knights.
