Badgers take a bite out of Penn State

Rowe continues to impress, De St. Phalle nets his first of the season

MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin’s elite power-play lineup was the star of the show in its 4-1 win against Penn State at Pegula Ice Arena on Thursday, marking Wisconsin’s third win against the Nittany Lions this season.

Ty Pelton-Byce and the Badgers capitalized on a power-play opportunity at 13:07 of the first period. Cole Caufield passed the puck across the offensive zone to Dylan Holloway who then found Pelton-Byce for a low-angle shot. The puck bounced in and out of the net, prompting a review of the play, but counted as a good goal and gave the Badgers a 1-0 lead.

Mathieu De St. Phalle doubled the Badgers’ lead at 16:58 in the first period with his first collegiate career goal, assisted by Owen Lindmark and Ty Emberson.

A short time after a Badger penalty expired, Penn State’s Kevin Wall slipped the puck past Rowe at the one-minute mark of the second period to make it a one-goal game.

The Badgers went back on the power-play late in the third period. Dylan Holloway tossed the puck up the boards to Cole Caufield on the blue line. After a quick exchange with Linus Weissbach, Caufield walked in and buried the puck over the shoulder of Penn State’s goaltender at 14:11 in the third period with Jack Gornaik doing work in front to help create a screen.

Dominick Mersch got the Badger’s fourth goal of the game, taking advantage of Penn State’s empty net as he rushed out of the penalty box after time expired on his slashing penalty.

Cameron Rowe continued to prove himself in the net with yet another stellar performance, stopping 45 of 46 shots on goal.

Despite heavily outshooting the Badgers, Penn State’s string of penalties allowed the Badgers to capitalize on the man advantage, scoring two goals on the power-play.
