Gundy Named to Phil Steele FCS Midseason All-America Team

Valparaiso University redshirt senior return specialist Chris Gundy (Smithfield, Va. / Smithfield) was named to Phil Steele’s Midseason All-America Second Team as a punt returner on Friday.

Gundy leads the FCS nation in combined kick return yards at 549. He ranks 12th in kick return average at 26.5, leads the FCS nation outright with three punt return touchdowns and leads the nation in punt return average at 25.8.

With 284 total punt return yards on the season, Gundy already ranks fourth in program history for single-season punt return yards and has the most since Ray Hiller’s program-record 316 in 1998.

Gundy broke a 60-year-old program record with his 95-yard punt return touchdown at Morehead State on Oct. 3. He outdid Tom Dohrmann’s 92-yard return from Sept. 17, 1966 at Wabash. His punt return broke the Pioneer Football League record as well, outdoing the previous record of 94 that was set by Davidson’s Toms Bernhards-Callahan and Jacksonville’s D’Andre Randle in 2011.

A two-time Pioneer Football League Special Teams Player of the Week this season, Gundy has already tied the PFL record for punt return touchdowns in a season, equaling a mark set by Jacksonville’s Elliott Finkley in 2008.
