Valpo Football Unveils Week 5 Team Honors
The Valparaiso University football team has announced its team honors for Week 5 following Saturday’s game at Morehead State.
Offensive lineman Aaron Byrd (Bradley, Ill. / Bourbonnais) was named the team’s Offensive Player of the Week, kick return specialist Charlie Maxwell (Elkhart, Ind. / Elkhart Christian Academy) earned the squad’s Special Teams Player of the Week and defensive lineman Trejuan Purty (Maryville, Tenn. / Maryville [East Tennessee State]) received the Defensive Player of the Week nod.
In addition, freshman wide receiver Joshua Becton (Kansas City, Kan. / F.L. Schlagle) was named the team’s Offensive and Special Teams Scout Team Player of the Week, while freshman defensive back Jacob Cleaver (Gaylord, Mich. / Gaylord) earned Scout Team Defensive Player of the Week recognition.
Byrd is the most experienced player and leader on an offensive line that helped Valpo outrush Morehead State 220-63 in Saturday’s 28-24 setback at Jayne Stadium in Morehead, Ky. Maxwell averaged 40.5 yards per kickoff return with a long of 56 over two returns. Purty racked up six tackles including 1 ½ TFL and a sack.
Valpo will close out the regular season by hosting San Diego on Saturday at noon CT at Brown Field. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with links to live video, audio and stats available on ValpoAthletics.com.
