TU Starts Amber McClure Fayerweather Memorial Tourney with Two Wins

UPLAND, Ind. – Taylor opened its 2021 campaign with a 3-1 showing in Florida and kept its momentum going on Friday, scoring two wins on its home court on the opening day of the first-annual Amber McClure Fayerweather Memorial Tournament.

The Trojans had to rally past Concordia (2-1) in the opening match of the day, charging back for a 23-25, 25-18, 17-25, 25-21, 15-12 victory. TU heated up down the stretch with 23 kills in its final 51 swings and hit a blistering .467 with just two miscues in the decisive fifth set.

Amanda Adams paced the offense with 19 kills, 15 digs and a .317 attack percentage, with Grace Isaacs and Ryan Czerniak combining for 22 kills and nine blocks.

Kacy Bragg and Stephaney Fifield also continued their strong play, with Bragg posting 47 assists and 12 digs, while Fifield recorded 22 digs and two service aces. Karli Ware also chipped in with 13 digs.

Taylor overcame another slow start in its second contest, this time scoring a 23-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-17 win against Saint Francis of Illinois (0-2) to improve to 5-1 for the program’s best start to a season since opening the 2014 campaign with eight victories in nine matches.

It was Adams and Isaacs powering the offense once again, as Adams slammed 19 kills and Isaacs finished with 16 kills in 23 attempts for a .565 clip. Freshmen Sarah Scott and Jaylynn Dunsmore joined in with seven and six kills each.

Bragg logged her fifth double-double of the young season with 50 assists and 12 digs, and Fifield collected a fourth-straight game of at least 20 digs with 25 to go with two aces.

Taylor (5-1) will play just one match on Saturday, with a 5:00 pm tilt against Bluefield (1-1) on the docket.
