TU Men’s Soccer Wins on the Road
RICHMOND, Ind. – On Wednesday the Taylor University men’s soccer squad defeated Indiana East 1-0 in Richmond, continuing its successful start to the 2021 season.
Not quite one minute into the match, Trojan goalie, Jacob Susud, scratched his way into the scorebook, as he recorded his seventh save of the season. Yet, while the Red Wolves (0-3-0) may have begun the match with energy, it was the Trojans who controlled the pace for the final 89 minutes.
Throughout the first half, TU took five shots while landing three on goal. None of which, however, found its way to the back of the net. Several of Taylor’s players were active in the team’s offensive effort, as five different Trojans fired a shot throughout the opening half. Despite its effort, though, TU went into the half tied 0-0.
The second half was all Trojans, as they maintained the ball on IUE’s side of the field for nearly the entirety of the 45-minute stretch. The team’s activity cultivated four corner kicks and two shots, before senior, Quinn Partain, broke the tie.
In the 61st minute of the match, Partain reaped the reward of junior midfielder, Jhon Alzate’s, good eyes and even better feet. Alzate recorded what was not only his first assist of the season but also the first of his career, as Partain scored his first goal of the short 2021 season. The goal was Partain’s fourth of his career.
After taking the lead, TU continued to control the ball while taking six more shots along the way, including two by freshman forward, Pablo Gonzalez Cacho. In total, the Trojans took 16 shots throughout the game and landed six on goal, while the Trojan defense limited IUE to just one shot on goal and a mere two total shots.
Susud kept the net clean in the first half, recording one save, while freshman, Sam Spiegel, took over in the second half. Spiegel never received an opportunity for his first career save, however, as the Red Wolves (0-3-0) were unable to land a shot on goal.
TU (2-0-0) remains on the road as the men’s soccer team plays Asbury (0-0-0) on Saturday, September 8, at 7:00 pm. The Trojans will look to begin the season 3-0-0 for the first time since 2012, when they began the year 5-1-0.
