TU Football Drops Snowy Senior Day Clash with Saints

UPLAND, Ind. – Taylor closed its 75th season of football amidst a heavy snow throughout Saturday’s 24-7 Senior Day loss to Siena Heights inside Turner Stadium.

With snow blanketing the field and strong winds further limiting the passing game, SHU’s (5-5, 4-3) fourth-ranked rush defense held Taylor without a positive yard on the ground over the game’s opening half and took a 10-0 lead to the break.

The Trojans picked up 45 yards on the ground in the second half and ended the contest with 212 total yards against the stout Saint defense, but saw four interceptions continually spoil drives throughout the afternoon.

Taylor’s lone score came on the first play of the fourth quarter, with Elijah McCloskey hitting a streaking Dakohta Sonnichsen for a 41-yard catch and run that trimmed the SHU lead to 17-7.

TU played well defensively, getting stops on 15-of-17 third downs and allowing just 279 total yards, but Siena Heights controlled the time of possession with over 35 minutes of clock time and scored on each of its red-zone chances.

Sonnichsen led the offense with three catches for 54 yards and the score, while Stephen Ellis also caught three passes for 40 yards and Ja Thomas had two receptions for 52 yards.

Jacob Hockett and Aven Jones topped the Trojan defense once again, as Hockett had 3.5 hits for negative yardage and closed with a game-high 13 tackles. Jones added 12 stops, with Cole Baker and Jeremiah Mansfield teaming on TU’s lone sack of the contest.

Taylor closes its 2022 season at 5-6 overall and 3-4 in MSFA Mideast League play. The five wins mark TU’s best since winning seven games in 2015.
