Trojans Roll Past Spring Arbor for Third-Straight Home Win
UPLAND, Ind. – Taylor improved to 6-3 inside Odle Arena this season and scored a third-straight victory on the home planks with a 78-63 win over Spring Arbor on Tuesday evening.
TU controlled the action throughout, taking the lead for good on a Jason Hubbard basket at the 16:12 mark and never looking back. The Trojans turned the ball over only three times in the contest and posted a 20-0 scoring edge over SAU (6-13, 0-7 CL) in points off turnovers.
That lopsided margin and a 24-of-39 shooting performance from two-point range helped the Trojans overcome a red-hot three-point shooting exhibition from the Cougars, who entered the contest as the Crossroads League’s worst perimeter shooting lineup.
SAU connected on 10-of-17 looks from three-point range for a 58.8-percent rate, but Taylor limited the guests to just 14-of-34 from inside the line and picked apart the Cougars on the other end with 19 assists on 32 made baskets.
Hubbard led the way once again, filling the box score with 26 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, two blocks and one steal. The senior shot 11-of-16 from two-point range on his way to a fifth-straight game with at least 20 points and his eighth double-double of the season.
Gavin Yoon provided the main support with a season-high 19 points. The sophomore guard scored 13 points in the second half and finished eight-of-14 overall with a trio of triples. The outing was Yoon’s third-straight game in double figures and upped his scoring average to 13.8 points per game over his last four times in the starting lineup.
Hubbard and Yoon had plenty of additional help, as Kaden Fuhrmann also posted 13 second-half points to end with 16 overall and Jackson Lewis chipped in with six assists, six rebounds and five points in his return to the point guard position.
The outcome of the game was rarely in doubt, as Taylor used a 9-0 spurt early into the action to claim a 14-6 lead and extended the spread to 31-16 deep in the opening half.
The advantage dipped to six but TU scored the final three points before halftime and used a strong opening five minutes out of the break to build a 50-34 lead. The margin never lowered to single-digits over the final 15 minutes and got as high as 24 before settling at the final of 78-63.
Taylor (7-11, 3-4 CL) is slated to return to action on Saturday, January 15 for a 3:00 pm tip at home against No. 25 Saint Francis (15-4, 5-2 CL).
