Trojans Rack Up 116 Points in Second Win in as Many Nights
UPLAND, Ind. – For the second-straight night, the Taylor University women’s basketball team won inside Odle Arena, this time by the tune a 116-39 victory over Miami-Middletown (0-3). There were a flurry of career-bests, as Taylor won by its largest margin since 2001.
The Trojans built off the momentum from last night’s win, limiting their turnovers once again while scoring 37 points off of the opponents 24 miscues. Taylor secured 15 steals and dominated the paint, out-rebounding the Thunderhawks 66-25.
Gretchen Moll and Taylor Westgate led the way for the Trojans in this way, both achieving career-bests. Westgate snagged 16 rebounds to go with her 14 points on 5-10 shooting, while Moll collected 10 boards to go with her 16 points on 8-12 shooting.
Speaking of career-bests, Ariel Dale increased her mark from last night’s 12 points to tonight’s 13. Junior, Haley Harrison scored a personal-best 10 points. Freshman, Maycee Woods locked in a season-best 12 points, all of which came in the first half, while fellow freshmen, Kendall Wayne, Jillian Osswald, and Kathleen Ahner each had the best games of their young careers. Wayne scored seven and Osswald put up six, while Ahner scattered the scoresheet with four points, four assists, five rebounds and two steals.
The scoring came early, often, and widespread for the Trojans, as TU outscored Miami-Middletown 30-9 in the first quarter. Moll led the way with six points, with Lauren James close behind with five while three other Trojans contributed four points en route to a 21-point Taylor lead.
That lead only expanded in the second quarter, as the Trojans posted 29 more points in comparison to a mere three-point quarter for the Thunderhawks. Taylor was lights out on defense, relentless in its pressure which led to Miami-Middletown going 0-14 from the floor.
Woods and Westgate rallied the Trojan offense in the second frame, the freshman scoring eight while the sophomore added seven.
Taylor went into the half up 59-12, preventing the opponent from scoring a single bucket in the paint.
Out of the half, Taylor continued to increase its lead, outpacing Miami-Middletown 28-11 in the third. This time, Claycee West led the charge, scoring nine points on 3-4 shooting from three. Dale backed West up with six third quarter points of her own.
Harrison and Wayne, then, ignited their career-nights in the fourth, each knocking in two three’s for six fourth-quarter points while the Trojans extended their lead to 77 by the end of the game.
Taylor’s 77-point winning margin is the largest since 2001, when the Trojans beat IU-Northwest by a score of 103-12 for a 91-point victory margin.
The Trojans (4-4) will look to carry their momentum through the weekend and into next weekend’s Crossroads League-opener at Huntington (2-3) on Saturday, November 20th, at 1:00 pm.
