Trojans Fall in Offensive Battle

OAKLAND CITY, Ind. – On Saturday afternoon the Taylor University women’s basketball team lost to Oakland City (6-6) on the road by a score of 95-83.

The offensive showcase was primarily decided by two momentous runs executed by the Mighty Oaks, a 13-1 run that sparked a larger advantage of 40-21 midway through the first half and a 13-1 run in which Oakland City scored the first 10 points of the fourth quarter.

Proficient shooting fueled the Mighty Oak offense along the way, as the team maintained a mark of 47.8 percent from the floor and 41.7 percent on 24 shots from deep.

Meanwhile, fouls were an additional element of significance in the contest as each team was called for 25 apiece, placing key Trojan players in extended foul trouble throughout the game.

Taylor got off to an early 13-4 lead to start the game, while four Trojans scattered the scoresheet. In time, Merideth Deckard and Kayla Kirtley established themselves as catalysts for the Trojan offense as the senior-duo combined for 24 of the team’s 34 first-half points.

Nonetheless, a 13-1 Mighty Oak run that served as a bridge between the first and second quarters sparked a 44-34 first-half Oakland City lead.

The Trojans rallied in the third quarter, as Lauren James and company helped craft a three-point Trojan lead with 2:16 left to play before the fourth. It was at this point, however, that Oakland City ripped off its second major run of the game, outscoring the Trojans 21-3 within the next five minutes of play.

Deckard and Kirtley increased their point-total down the stretch, each player recording season-highs, respectively, with 18 and 22 points. It was all too-little-too-late for the Trojans, though, as Oakland City maintained its lead en route to a 95-83 victory.

Taylor (7-9, 1-3 CL) will pause its season over the holidays, before entering back into league play against Bethel (7-9, 2-2 CL) on Wednesday, January 5th, 2022 at 7:00 pm.
