Taylor Drops Home Opening Double Header Against Midway
UPLAND, Ind. – The Taylor softball team dropped both games in its home opener at Gundakunst Field against Midway.
The opener was a pitching duel as both offenses were cooled as the game went to extra innings tied at 0. The Eagles (8-2) put up two runs in the eighth as TU was unable to score in its half of the inning.
Maddi Evans tossed seven scoreless frames before being hit with two runs in the extra inning. Evans had nine strikeouts on the day, bringing her season total up to 35. She worked out of jams with multiple runners on base in the third, fourth and sixth innings.
The Trojan bats were unable to break through as their best chance came in the sixth with the bases loaded and two outs. Kristin Mihalic started the inning with a walk and was joined on the bases by Emma West with a single and Ashton Whitman getting hit by a pitch. They were stranded as the inning ended on a groundout.
After being silent in the opener the bats started to wake up in the second game as the Trojans outhit Midway 11-10.
Midway grabbed a quick lead 1-0 in the first and added three runs in the third and another in the fourth to stretch the lead to 5-0.
Taylor started its comeback in the fourth when Whitman scored on a sac fly by Rastetter. The Trojans got two more in the fifth on a Caitlyn Grim single and West reaching on an error set up Alexi Clay for a two-run double.
Midway added another in the sixth to grow their lead to 6-3, but the Trojans were not done yet.
Taylor started the sixth with four-straight singles by Rastetter, Mihalic, Mackenzie Noah and Grim. Noah secured an RBI as Rastetter scored on her single and Mihalic scored on Grim’s single to take the lead down to one. Taylor went down in order after that to end the threat.
Noah worked valiantly in game two, pitching all seven innings with two strikeouts and only surrendering four earned runs.
Taylor (3-8) will be back on the diamond next Tuesday against in the league opener for both teams No. 8 Indiana Wesleyan (13-3) in Marion.
