Taylor Suffers Dramatic Loss to Marian Inside Turner
UPLAND, Ind. – In a hard-fought and highly competitive match, the Taylor University men’s soccer team lost to Marian (9-6-2, 5-3 CL) by a score of 3-2 in double-overtime, with senior, Quinn Partain, scoring each of the Trojan goals.
Taylor dominated play throughout much of the first half, taking twice as many shots as Marian and knocking in two goals.
Partain first scratched the scorebook at the 10-minute mark, benefiting from Jhon Alzate’s fourth assist of the season. While Partain fulfilled and Alzate mediated, the sequence was started by Brian Matipa, who first intercepted a pass in the Knight backfield.
Marian responded with a fourfold flurry of shots, yet to no avail as Trojan goalie, Sam Spiegel, kept the net clean.
Partain, then, itched the scratch of the scorebook for a second time, this time scoring off of a foul kick from 33 yards out on the right side of the field. The senior’s strike flew millimeters beyond the head of a diving Luke Holwarda, who froze the Knight goalie, creating space for the ball to sneak into the net’s left pocket.
By the end of the first half alone, the Wheaton, Illinois, native earned his first-career multi-goal match, now leading the Trojans with five goals on the season.
Taylor maintained a 2-0 lead heading into the half, but Marian would soon strike back as the Knights bookended the second half with two goals of their own.
With 10 minutes in and just under 10 minutes remaining, Marian found the back of the net and drew even with Taylor, pushing the match into overtime. Scattered in between, however, were numerous saves by Spiegel, two of which were simply phenomenal and one of which spoiled a Knight penalty kick.
Nonetheless, the score was tied at two after 90 minutes of play and would remain that way throughout the first overtime period.
The match nearly ended in a draw, but Marian managed to break the tie with one minute to play, closing the match in a matter of seconds.
Despite allowing three goals, Spiegel put forth a remarkable effort in goal, securing a career-high 15 saves, several of which are sure to make the season’s highlight reel.
Taylor (8-6-1, 3-4-1 CL) will return to action on Saturday, October 30th, for the regular-season finale at home against Saint Francis (4-9-4, 0-6-2, CL) at 7:00 pm.
