Taylor Drops Both in Doubleheader with RV MVNU

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. – Taylor’s softball team struggled to score in a pair of losses to RV Mount Vernon Nazarene (33-11, 23-9 CL).

An offense highlight, though, Emma West continued her hot-hitting, ripping four base-knocks, including a triple and a stolen base, while scoring once and driving in a run as well in the doubleheader.

The Trojans (21-22, 18-14 CL) dropped a heartbreaker in game one, leading 2-0 with two outs in the seventh, before falling 3-2.

Taylor ripped 11 hits in game one, but failed to fully capitalize, plating only two runs, while leaving nine on-base throughout.

However, the Trojans got on the board first in the sixth. Ashton Whitman led the inning off by blasting a double off the left field wall, before having Maddie Schultz run for her. Kristin Mihalic, then, laced a double to right center to plate Schultz, giving TU a 1-0 advantage.

Taylor went on to increase its lead late in the game, when West ripped a one-out single in the top of the seventh before advancing into scoring position with a stolen base. Whitman continued her consistent brilliance at the plate, lacing another double, this time to center field to plate West and stretch the lead to 2-0.

The insurance run was not enough, however, as RV Mount Vernon Nazarene scored three runs, all with two outs, in the bottom of the seventh to steal game one from Taylor in walk-off fashion.

Maddi Evans pitched valiantly in game one, holding the powerful Cougar offense to three runs, while striking out four.

RV Mount Vernon Nazarene took control of game two early on, scoring seven runs in the second inning to run away in game two.

The Cougars held a 9-0 lead heading into the fifth and the Trojans could not avoid the run-rule, plating a single run, before falling 9-1 in five innings.

TU will be back in action for its last home game of the year, facing off against cross-county rival No. 8 Indiana Wesleyan (41-7, 26-4 CL) on Thursday, April 28th. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 pm at Gudakunst Field.
