Bounce-Back Win Secures Split with Saint Francis
UPLAND, Ind. – TU softball earned a split with Saint Francis, as the teams traded shutouts in the two games. Taylor (13-12, 10-4 CL) would grab the game-two victory, using a balanced offensive attack with ten base hits by seven different players.
Mackenzie Noah continued her strong debut season for the Trojans, notching the win in game two. Noah pitched a complete game shutout, with three strikeouts allowing only one walk. Noah’s (6-7) record does not reflect the value she has given in the circle. The righty pitched another complete game shutout, and secured her fifth win in her last six outings. During this run, the freshman has pitched three complete games, notching a 1.22 earned run average in 28.2 innings.
In the victory, Taylor got on the board in the second, scoring a run after three-consecutive singles by Morgan Back, Noah, and Jersey Tannehill. Lexi Abruzzo pinch-ran for Back and scored after the center fielder bobbled the ball on Tannehill’s single.
Crossroads League Player-of-the-Week, Ashton Whitman, started the third with a single, before advancing to second on a throwing error. Aleyah Rastetter laid down an inch-perfect sacrifice bunt to place runners on second and third with one out. Whitman scored on a play at the plate, sliding underneath a high tag by the catcher. Caitlyn Grim finished the scoring, crossing the plate on a knock by Back, giving the Trojans a 3-0 lead.
The Trojans added two insurance runs in the sixth with a two-out rally. Camryn Arlotto got things going with a pinch-hit single, followed by Tannehill reaching on an error. Emma West drove in Arlotto with a rip up-the-middle, and Tannehill scored on another error putting the score at 5-0.
Taylor struggled to get much going in game one, as Saint Francis (13-9, 5-5 CL) got the victory 4-0.
Saint Francis used a pair two-run home runs in the fifth and sixth to break the deadlock and secure the win in game one.
Taylor had chances in the second, third, and fifth frames, placing a runner on second in each inning, but could not cash in any of the opportunities.
TU softball is scheduled to play Tuesday, against Spring Arbor (10-15, 4-10 CL), at Gudakunst Field. Weather permitting, first pitch will be at 4:00 pm.
