Soccer has long been part of The Bend’s sports fabric through vibrant local youth programs. Now with the addition of a pre-professional franchise, the soccer community has expanded.

Initially announced in 2019, the coronavirus pandemic meant waiting a little longer for the South Bend Lions to get started. But they’re now underway, participating in the Great Lakes Division of USL League Two. The league provides a spotlight and development platform for college-aged players while maintaining their eligibility. Unofficially, it is considered the fourth tier of competition in the United States with Major League Soccer at the top.

The Lions are 1-1-0 through two games with their first home match scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday, May 29 at TCU School Field in South Bend. They will play six more home matches in June and July before the regular season wraps up. Single game tickets are available if you want to add a match to your visit itinerary.
