Illinois and Rutgers Earn Weekly Men’s Basketball Honors

Rutgers’ Geo Baker named Player of the Week;

Illinois’ Andre Curbelo named Freshman of the Week

 

Player of the Week

Geo Baker, Rutgers

G – Sr. – 6-4 – Derry, N.H. – Proctor Academy – Major: Human Resources Management

  • Scored a season-high 20 points, dished out a season-high 10 assists and grabbed five rebounds in Rutgers’ 74-63 Senior Night win over Indiana. Added two steals and a blocked shot in the game.
  • Tied a career-high with six three-pointers against Indiana to become the first college player in the country this season to register at least six three-pointers and 10 assists in the same game. Became the first player in Rutgers history to record six three-pointers and 10 assists in regulation during a Big Ten game.
  • Marked the second double-double of his career and his first since 2017.
  • Earns the first Player of the Week accolade of his career; was also named Freshman of the Week on Dec. 18, 2017.
  • This marks the first time since Rutgers joined the Big Ten in 2014-15 that a Scarlet Knight has been named Big Ten Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.

 

Freshman of the Week

Andre Curbelo, Illinois

G – 6-1 – Vega Baja, Puerto Rico – Long Island Lutheran (N.Y.) – Major: Recreation, Sport and Tourism

  • Averaged 13.0 points, 7.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists in games at Michigan State, vs. Nebraska and at then-ranked No. 23/No. 24 Wisconsin.
  • Shot 15-for-28 from the field (.536 pct.) and 8-for-10 from the free throw line (.800 pct.) on the week.
  • Registered the first double-double of his career and nearly notched a triple-double in Illinois’ win vs. Nebraska, scoring 10 points, grabbing 12 rebounds and dishing eight assists against the Cornhuskers.
  • Notched 17 points against then-ranked No. 23/No. 24 Wisconsin, marking the most points he has scored in a conference game this season. Added seven rebounds, two steals and an assist in the win.
  • Earns the first Freshman of the Week accolade of his career.
