Illinois’ Ayo Dosunmu named Player of the Week;

Purdue’s Jaden Ivey named Freshman of the Week

 

Player of the Week

Ayo Dosunmu, Illinois
G – Jr. – 6-5 – Chicago, Ill. – Morgan Park (Ill.) – Major: Communication

  • Scored 21 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and dished out 12 assists in the Illini’s 75-60 win over then-ranked No. 19/N0. 20 Wisconsin. Became just the third player in Illinois history, and the first since 2001, to record a triple-double (Mark Smith, 2/1/79; Sergio McClain 1/13/01). Became the first Illinois player to record a triple-double against a ranked opponent.
  • Recorded the first triple-double by a Big Ten player since Ohio State’s JaQuan Lyle (16 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists vs. Rutgers on 1/13/16). The last Big Ten player to record a 20-plus point triple-double in a conference game was Ohio State’s D’Angelo Russell (23 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists at Rutgers on 2/8/15).
  • Contributed 10 points and six rebounds in Illinois’ 75-71 overtime win at Indiana.
  • Helped the Illini defeat the Badgers in Champaign for the first time in 10 years and the Hoosiers in Bloomington for the first time in 11 years.
  • Earns the fifth Player of the Week accolade of his career; was also a two-time Freshman of the Week honoree in 2018-19.

Freshman of the Week

Jaden Ivey, Purdue

G – 6-4 – South Bend, Ind. – La Lumiere School (Ind.) – Major: Undecided

  • Averaged 17.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game in contests against Maryland and Northwestern. Also added two steals and one blocked shot on the week.
  • Registered career highs in points (20) and rebounds (seven) during Purdue’s 75-70 win over Northwestern. Also added three assists and two steals in the win.
  • Scored 14 points, grabbed four rebounds and dished out three assists in a tight 61-60 loss at Maryland.
  • Is one of four Boilermaker freshmen to be named Big Ten Freshman of the Week this season and is the second to win the award multiple times (Jan. 25 and Feb. 8). Fellow freshmen Zach Edey (Nov. 11), Mason Gillis (Dec. 21) and Brandon Newman (Jan. 18 and Feb. 1) have all won the award this season.
  • Earns the second Freshman of the Week accolade of his career.
