Heiniger Named CoSIDA Academic All-American
AUSTIN, Texas – Teegan Heiniger became the first Taylor University lacrosse student-athlete to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-American on Tuesday, earning NAIA At-Large Second-Team honors from the College of Sports Information Directors of America.
The prestigious 20-man list of First and Second-Team Academic All-Americans was voted on and selected by members of CoSIDA, recognizing the top men’s student-athletes from around the NAIA from the sports of lacrosse, rifle, skiing, fencing, swimming, tennis, golf, volleyball, gymnastics, water polo, hockey and wrestling.
Heiniger was named Second-Team Academic All-America, following two-straight Academic All-District nods. The midfielder concluded his junior season with a 3.97 grade-point average in engineering.
On the field, Heiniger played in each of Taylor’s 15 games this spring, scoring 11 goals and picking up eight assists, 35 ground balls and five forced miscues.
In addition to those on-field stats, Heiniger earned Academic All-Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference attention and will collect NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors later this fall for his work in the classroom.
Heiniger joined Vincent Miranda of the TU men’s basketball program as the two Taylor student-athletes so far to receive CoSIDA Academic All-America honors for the 2020-2021 year.
Taylor now boasts 95 CoSIDA Academic All-American honors in school history, with 93 of those awards coming since 2010.
The CoSIDA Academic All-District and All-America awards are designed to showcase student-athletes for outstanding achievements in the classroom, as well as on the court or field of play. In order to be eligible for the honor, an athlete must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30, must have reached sophomore status academically with at least one full year at their current institution and must have participated in over half of the team’s competitions as a key contributor during the current season.
Student-athletes are nominated for the award by their institution’s Sports Information Department and are selected via a vote by CoSIDA members.
