Fuhrmann Nets 39 to Lift Taylor Past Huntington in Overtime
HUNTINGTON, Ind. – Kaden Fuhrmann scored 23 second-half points and added six more in the extra session to help Taylor open its Crossroads League schedule with a thrilling come-from-behind win at Huntington.
Just two games removed from netting a career-high 26 points in a Taylor home win, Fuhrmann went off for 39 points in the 77-74 overtime victory that handed Huntington (5-2, 0-1 CL) its first home defeat of the year.
The Trojans needed every bit of Fuhrmann’s heroics, after 17 first-half turnovers and a slow start to the second half put the Purple and Gold in a 14-point deficit with 18:37 to play in the affair.
Fuhrmann ignited the comeback by sinking four-straight treys to draw TU back to within 43-41 just four minutes later. A Jakeb Kinsey assist to Jeff Clayton for a game-tying dunk was then followed by a Fuhrmann pull-up that gave Taylor a 47-46 lead.
Fuhrmann provided 16 points during the game-changing, 18-5, stretch from Taylor, which was part of a larger, 22-7, run that gave new life to the Trojans.
The hosts hit back with eight-straight points but a baseline hoop from Fuhrmann knotted the score and back-to-back slams from Jason Hubbard gave TU a 61-60 lead with 5:46 on the clock.
Taylor did not score another field goal until a put-back from Hubbard with 2.7 seconds left sent the two squads to overtime gridlocked at 68-68.
Huntington struck first in the extra-session but back-to-back triples from Jackson Lewis and Fuhrmann opened a 74-70 Taylor lead and three free throws from Fuhrmann in the final eight seconds sealed the 77-74 triumph and gave the Trojans their first road win of the season.
The Taylor defense turned in another strong effort by holding HU to 41.8 percent shooting and a six-of-25 showing from three-point range. TU countered by hitting 10-of-22 looks from deep and 19-of-22 free throws to overcome 27 turnovers and a 14-point deficit in the paint.
Fuhrmann played a huge role in those shooting numbers, finishing seven-of-13 from three-point range and 12-of-13 from the charity stripe on his way to a 39-point, seven-rebound, two-steal, one-block stat line. The sophomore guard’s 39-point outburst is the program’s highest single-game scoring total in two decades.
Hubbard joined Fuhrmann in double figures, posting his fifth double-double in eight games this season and ending with 12 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and two blocks.
Taylor (3-5, 1-0 CL) will look for a fourth-straight win when it hosts Goshen (2-6, 0-1 CL) on Tuesday, November 23 at 7:00 pm. The game will follow the TU women’s squad hosting Goshen in a 5:00 pm start inside Odle Arena.
